Choosing the right career for you is probably one of the biggest decisions that you will make.  After all, whatever path you choose, your job will be a major aspect of your life for many years to come. 

What is the ideal job?  Well that depends on you and whilst we would all like to be movie stars, successful entrepreneurs or the next Noble prize winner, we do have to be realistic.  Your ideal job should be something that challenges, interests and motivates you.

A few, lucky people know what they want to do from day one and they achieve it, but the majority of us make it up as we go along, make mistakes and modify our plans along the way.  To help you find your vocation in life we have provided the following guidance so grab a pen, work your way through these pointers and see what you really want to do for a living.

• What drives you to suceed?   Do you like working under pressure and exceeding targets or would you rather take your time and produce quality solutions?  Also consider what demotivates you and what doesn't drive you to succeed.
• What are your long term goals?   What would you like to be doing in ten years time?  What qualifications and experience do you need to get there?  Once you have worked out where you want to be, consider how you will acheive your aspirations and the career path you need to start now.
• What do you enjoy?  Consider previous employment, voluntary work and hobbies.  Do you like travelling or working in an office?  Do you like meeting people or would you rather work in a small group?  Also consider what you dislike and what things you would prefer to avoid.
• What skills and experience do you already have to offer?  Do you have a specialist expertise or knowledge?  Do you enjoy using it and will it be useful to a new employer?
• What is your lifestyle?  How much time are you prepared to spend at work and how much of your own time do you need? Are you strictly 9 to 5 or are you prepared to do overtime and/or shift work?  Consider that you are likely to get paid more for additional and unsociable hours but at the lost of quality time.
